Magic Moments

After acknowledging yesterday’s disasters I’ve made better progress with the remainder of the weekend. The little machines I’m making involve a delicate balance between mechanics and art. There’s a lot of thought and planning as well as trial and creativity. The results need to look elegant and simple despite the unseen, and often complex, forces at work.

Before making this new base I had to work out the moments on the forces that will play out once the rest of this artwork is assembled. There’s been a little thought on cantilevers too this afternoon. I’ve also been considering the maximum vertical weight that can be applied to the horizontal spindle. This might sound a bit over kill but I can’t just plonk some heavy chunk of art on top of the platform and then expect the handle to turn when I’m done.

Less engineering and more art in the next day or so…
