Making my Automata is a long and slow process. Angles and cuts have to be just right so that the machinery is free to move in the smoothest way possible. This afternoon I’ve been working on the two arm sections on the right of this picture. It’s precision cutting and precision gluing. This isn’t something that can be rushed if it is to work properly and look good.
Normally I start with the mechanism underneath and build upwards but with this piece I knew that the mechanism would be quite simple and that the precision work is actually up top. There’s still a little way to go yet with this Marionette. Her hands will be set and there will be strings… and a fascinator on her head I think. Hmmm…. yes, a little more to go yet. She’ll definitely be finished in time for my Methodology exhibition at the start of next month.
