Another photography group looking at portraits today but with completely different results. It’s no surprise that even with the same tasks a different group will interpret things in a new way. The idea of a portrait is a very personal one. How we see ourselves and how we want to be seen by others is as varied as our fingerprints.
It was uplifting to see the group gain so much confidence through considering what their image should be and how they can play with the camera to gain different results. The discussion today was more about who we want to be and how this compares to who we feel we currently are.
The idea of the self is something which shifts depending on age and experience. Who we feel we are can change depending on who we are with and the context of the situation. Some people ooze confidence in group situations, others are only confident at home. Some people hate the bodies they are in whilst others embrace their curves. Choosing what part of our personalities to capture and share is what a portrait is all about.
