The Ultimate Confusion

I’ve been recreating three of our latest artworks in miniature today. I’ve taken digital photographs of the finished 12″ x 12″ assemblages and am working with smaller 2.5″ x 2.5″ crops. These crops themselves are now printed out and are currently being turned into glued collages.

The results are unnerving since they seem a lot deeper and a lot more intricate than they are. It’s hard to see where an actual layer ends and the photograph of another layer begins. The shadows in the photograph are everything in this illusion and the results are uncanny.

In the image below there are only 2 layers of paper and yet there appears to be far more. The top layer consists of the zigzag on the far right and the darker orange at the top of the picture. The remainder of this is a not so simple photograph.

I’m photographing layers then layering photographs. I’m confused just looking at it let alone trying to explain this. Sometimes words fail me.
