My Private View

I’ve been promising myself for a while that I will explore this mountain. It’s a stone’s throw from a little road which snakes from Maerdy through to Aberdare. I drive up this way regularly on my way home from The Workers Gallery in Ynyshir and I’ve finally been fortunate enough today to have some good enough weather for a picnic.

I like to discover these sneaky places and keep them for myself. I don’t mind whether they’re little urban back lanes or great big mountains. These places just feel different when you’re completely on your own. They feel more intimate.

Just reading that back I feel stupid. How can the solitude of being alone on top of a great big mountain be intimate? Well, today the birds sang just to me and the view was mine and mine alone to enjoy. Nature went about doing its thing with me as its only audience; my own private view. It’s a special kind of privacy which can only be achieved in solitude. Here I am not answerable to anyone and my thoughts and words are for me alone.

Somehow the feeling isn’t the same when I share these places with other people. Don’t get me wrong, I’m still more than happy to rediscover this little secret place with my closest friends at some point in the future. There will be unspoken compromise, comfortable sharing, and the view will be ours.

It will be good but this mountain will no longer be mine.
