This is the second of the Walk/Listen/Respond images which I created yesterday as part of an ongoing collaboration. The album was chosen by Stephen Donnelly for me to respond to. I’d not heard Luke Howard’s music before so I felt immediately out of my comfort zone.
I found myself instantly drawn to uncomfortable places despite the music being quite ambient. I’d been meaning to visit this space for many years but had never found the right time so as my feet turned a corner I felt almost relieved to find myself pulled up into this subway. The subway leads beneath the railway, has an obtuse bend in the middle, and is on quite a steep incline. It is unlit and for a moment in the middle I found myself walking almost blind.
I don’t scare very easily at all so I paused here to reflect how I was feeling given some horrific things I know happened here almost a decade ago. As I did so a fellow walker found his way into the light. Only afterwards have I found the meaning of the track title so this subway as a Schlusshymne is particularly poignant for me.
