I completed Olympia late last night. She’s the third little collage I’ve made since Friday morning (The second one, Crystal, is available now for viewing on Facebook). This is a week’s work done in 3 days and I’m absolutely exhausted. My eyes and hands are in pieces and my back has stiffened up beyond belief.
Olympia is a deliberately blind doll. Nothing about her is real. The complete pixellation of her body and face adds to the unreality. I used the same technique here that I used before for Mr B’s Birthday card. It’s a tiring process because there is no room for error with placing pieces. Each has to be correct to within fractions of a millimetre else the facial features will lose their shape.
I chose the name Olympia as a nod to the character of the same name in E.T.A. Hoffmann’s ‘The Sandman’ but she could quite easily be Pris from Blade Runner, or any number of fictional characters where the female automaton is attempting to have existence in a world which is duty bound to reject her. I’m deliberately playing with the uncanny to make pseudo-cute dolls into something other. Psychologists, feminists, and academics could have a field day with this new work.
