I’ve been working at building up layers of paper to give the illusion of added depth to this yellow ribbon. It’s tricky business because the original ribbon photographed is that thin plastic tape used on construction sites so it doesn’t behave as a thicker material would. If I build up the layers too thickly the illusion of depth will be there yet the idea of the compositional quality of the materials will be lost.
As always, when I reach an impasses such as this, I will defer any decision to a later date. If I focus solely on this part of the collage I will send my brain round in circles. A better solution is to push on with what is happening around this part of the picture and return to the ribbon later once it is set in a proper context. Hopefully everything will become clearer in a few days time.
