Fire at the Orphanage

When I was small I had a recurring dream. I dreamed I lived in a red brick orphanage. Every night whilst we slept there would be a fire. This fire would consume the building in no time at all, ripping through the wooden timbers and lath walls. In my dream I would awaken and have the choice of either the rear stairs or the front stairs to make my escape. It didn’t matter which I chose, they both lead to the same door, this door. I always managed to escape. Many didn’t.

This 6″ x 4″ piece is a one-off and was created for The Response Project organised by The Art House Co-op. You can find out more about this project and see the original source image here
