Cleft Palette

6.2.3 Concrete Random ‘Clone’ (detail)

I’ve found myself having to improvise on many an occasion. Here I’ve had to use two pieces to create the grey curve rather than one. The split is really obvious but I had no other way around this. Since I started by assembling pieces in this corner, it hasn’t set things up well for the remainder of the piece.

Each clone is about accuracy and also about confidence. The moment my confidence is weakened, I find myself unable to care about the accuracy needed for the remainder of the piece. I’ll do my best but I know that the final result won’t be good enough in comparison to earlier clones. This cleft in my palette has formed a cleft in my brain which will not be easy to heal.
