Transmutations

6.1 Concrete Random (detail)

For a long time now I’ve been renaming my Response series to be more appropriate to the evolutionary concepts that I have been considering. Initially each Response was given a number simply because it felt like a convenient thing to be doing. Now though each species of Response has its own identification and is labelled appropriately to either its discovery or its individual behaviour.

But what of the title of the series?

I’ve felt for a long time that Responses is no longer an appropriate descriptor. It describes my behaviour towards the initial subject material but it fails to describe the cloning aspects of my work and the behaviour of each clone towards her sisters and parent. I’ve been struggling to find something better until yesterday whilst reading through Darwin’s notes. He theorises, just as I have done, about species change and transmutations. The transformation from my elemental pieces into something new is a metamorphosis, a transition, a transubstantiation from photographs to collages. Transmutations is wholly appropriate title in every sense of the word.

“I am fully convinced that species are not immutable…” Charles Darwin
