I have been asked often why I choose to change my own images using collage techniques rather than simply displaying the photograph.
Every photographer changes the nature of their photograph before displaying it. The photographer crops, dodges, burns, edits, and airbrushes away in order to provide the viewer with his smoother version of a recognisable truth.
Surely I also rework the truth? I simply choose to do it by altering the physical medium of the finished product. I rip to change the emphasis of the photograph’s design. I glue to draw the eye away from this and towards that. I am a bad liar so I place the lies on display rather than hiding them using the darkroom tools of the photographer.
My truth is a recognisable fiction. My truth is a fairer version of the fact.
